We all learn as we go...at the end of the day, we all do our best. I just lost a couple of small chocolate Orandas I purchased a couple of weeks ago. Instead of treating preemptively for flukes, I just watched and waited to see if they needed it. They were doing fine, it seemed, until they started to hug the bottom of the tank. By the time I realized what was happening, the effort I made to save them was too late. I will now ALWAYS treat new fish with salt and Prazi. Both are gentle, safe and effective. You not only can learn from your own experiences but you can learn from the experiences of others as well.

Do yourself a favor....check out Tommy's auction tonight....goldfishnet.com and Ken's auction on Friday night...dandyorandas.com. I guarantee after seeing those beautiful fish, you'll be back in the game!

Thanks danarea, I will get that book right away. I plan on moving away from tropicals to goldies. I really enjoy them. I'm so bummed that my tank is missing that big beautiful fish. I'm still shocked how quickly he died. But I'll learn going forward. Thank you for your direction!

Oh my goodness! I am sorry you lost your ryukin. Sometimes fish are too sick to be saved.

Get the book "Fancy Goldfish, A Complete Guide to Care and Collecting" by Dr. Erik Johnson and Richard Hess. This is THE most comprehensive guide to keeping fancy goldfish healthy.

Please don't lose heart! Sometimes poop just happens.

Over my time keeping goldfish I have learned a few of things . 1). When treating fish, research it's symptoms and pick the treatment recommended. STAY THE COURSE for that treatment before changing treatments. 2). Sometimes "not worse" is the first step to "getting better". Be patient. It isn't easy, but it's necessary. 3) Often the only things needed to treat goldfish is aquarium salt and peroxide. xStronger medications and the stress they cause often kill a fish...

I don't mind at all that you pm'd me. I'm happy to help if I can!

Well, looks like I killed my ryukin. If you could let me know what happened, I would sure appreciate it. Obviously I need to learn from my costly mistake!

      Hi danarea,
Just wanted to update you. Obviously I made a mistake in doing a 100% waterchange and removing all of the salt. I've been googling and going through the forums like crazy and it looks like I should've done a slow transition away from the salt treatment. I dissolved and added the salt back into his water. I know all of this abrupt changing is extremely stressful, but I figured I put him back into his normal environment and hope for the best. I thought he had passed for a minute because his gills weren't moving and he was just floating. When I touched him he swam back down to the bottom and righted himself. However, he quickly flipped back over and rose to the top. I have a sponge filter and a stone in his little 5 gal so he's plenty oxgenated. I've had fish for years, but this last year is my first try at goldies. They are truly my favorite. I'll be sad if I lose him (especially my 10 year old daughter). Thanks for any insight.

      Hi danarea,
My ryukin now has SBD so I hope you don't mind that I'm just messaging you personally rather than posting. I've been doing 100% water changes ever day in his 5gal QT replacing 1tsp AQ salt daily. I just stopped today. I did another 100% change and now he's completely flipped over. I'm assuming this is from the salt? I normally feed Omega One sinking pellets, but I'm going to switch to peas and fasting. Any other reccomendations? The gash in his side looks GREAT and he's healing quickly. I haven't done the QT swab on the hump because I'm worried about using clove. That's another topic all together. I just want to get through the upside down swimmer. Thank you for all your help!! (ps. I meant to say that I've finished the salt treatment and he's now in plain water!)

Hey guys! I'm looking to find out what it means when a goldfish description states that a fish has "a pearl" in the eye or eyes...
