Will sticking an airstone inside of a sponge work as a sponge filter for fry?

try something like this you dont have to have a long pipe on top 1 inch on top of the sponge is enough.

I tried it and will this work? I snuggly fitted a 1" PVC pipe with multiple holes drilled on the sides down the topfin internal filter media and capped off the end. Then I put 3 pieces of fluval biomax to weigh it down without blocking any holes. I removed the airstone to increase airflow. I intend to use this for fry. The tank is now stocked with a large nerite snail and a bundle of anachris.

The tank is a 20 gal long filled 6 in. The sponge itself is 3.5 in. tall, 2.5 in. wide and 2 in. long. The filter's height is about 2 mm from the surface.

i think its litle bit small you could get something like this

    or use 2 of them.

lots of frys in the tank will create a large bioload since fully grown fish eat like 1-2% of thiere body weight but frys eat more like 5% of thier body weight. this means you need more biological filtration for frys then you need for larger fish.

This is my tilapia frys they are about 2 weeks old and there is about 50 of them in a 8 gallon nursery tank. The filter you see in there is for up to 15 gallons.
