Hey folks! I have a young butterfly goldfish that just recently lost his baby blacks and turned solid orange. I know this is very normal. However, over the last week, the orange has been turning white in an amazing pattern. This I have never seen before and I'm a bit concerned that it could be something wrong, though I hope he is just turning gorgeous! He is acting healthy and eating like a piggy. No other symptoms that I can see.

He is in a 280 gal patio pond with 80% water changes twice a week. Ammonia and nitrites are at 0, nitrates are usually around 10-20. He is a survivor from a batch of babies where 90% of them mysteriously got sick and died though I tried treating them for everything over the course of a few months.

Orange changing to white isn't unusual, and I know of no disease or other problem that causes that color change. He may turn all white, but I hope he keeps the pattern.

Two 80% water changes a week do you have a filter in the pond?

I know black often changes to other colors only seen orange to white once.

Yes, there is a filter 580gph with 2 sections of bioballs, sponges, and ceramic rings. The pond is a bit overstocked with 4 adult butterflies, 10 juvie goldfish around this guy's size, and 1 adult ranchu. 5 of the juvies will be adopted by a friend at the end of the summer, so we will be down to normal soon.
