View Full Version : What Should One Look For In A Good Lionhead?

I am a bit confused about the pics I have seen for Lionheads. I am not talking about SVRs, but what we call "Lionheads". It seems that in some pics, the headgrowth outshines the body, but in other pics, the body form is great, but there is hardly any head growth. So, do you look for good headgrowth or body form, or both? Should a lionhead have a curve like a SVR on the back and a good tail tuck? The pics I am referring to are on GF auctions from Ken and Tommy. Thanks!!!

Lionhead are supposed to have a relatively flat back and a relatively flat tail that joins the body an an obtuse angle. The back does not have a lot of curve, but you still want it to be smooth without dips and bumps. They are bred for a large head growth, but the defining characteristic is the shape of the body. SVR are bred for a arched back and good tail tuck with less emphasis on the amount of head growth. These days, a lionhead head growth on a SVR body is called a lionchu.

OIC!!! So many of these "lionheads" I have seen lately are Lionchu, because there is alot of emphasis placed on that curve of their back and I knew that was a characteristic of SVR (Jap. Lionhead as Dan's states they are called) but was not sure if a Lionhead was supposed to have that curve and tail tuck or not. Thanks for clearing that up for me, Steve!

addition to Steve suggestion, I will add
- penducle should not too long or too short
- tail should fork between 25% to 55%
- should have even head growth.
- paired fins
