I have always battled frogs in my 300 gallon pond. They are unwanted visitors.
Usually I am able to net out the frogs and re-home them to the creek down the road. However, this new frog has eluded all attempts at capture.
Even worse, this individual who has moved in is HUGE! I am seriously concerned he will eat a few of my smaller fish. That is how big this dude is.
Also, this frog is very clever. Immediately ducks under the water as soon as I approach the pond. I guess that is why he is so large. He is "smarter than the average frog."
Does anyone have any special tip to rid your pond of frogs? Shooting the frog is not a practical option. My pond is so small and so close to my house--a bad shot could kill a fish or take out a window....:youtellme:

No, I don't, but I wish you luck! I know how you feel about the frogs, too. It is not that I don't like them, but NOT in my pond! I, too, am scared they will try and eat my fish.

Did I ever tell you guys about the bull frog who was eating my baby ducks? Try a wrist-rocket sling shot and a flash light.

Yeah, on this day the frog was having a hard time making its get-away so I was able to catch it in a net. That's when it coughed up a baby duck.

Holy cow!
With a belly full of baby duck, no wonder it was having a hard time getting away !
How big was the frog ??

I am happy to report I was able to catch the huge frog with my net. There was a bit of drama as the frog jumped out of the net, I screamed, hit him over the head with the net--then closed in on him. I transported the frog to a creek just down the road. Hopefully he will not be back.....:bounce:

Hi Veil gal,

Just out of curiousity, What problems is your unwanted frog causing? How big is this frog?

I don't have a local frogs in my rural neighberhood. So I caught three Cascadia frogs at a natural pond at a friends property south of Tacoma, WA. Cascadia frogs are about four inches long, and stay in or near water most of the time. I welcome them for the fact that they help keep the fries, slugs, and other garden pests in check.

The problem this frog (who is now gone) could have caused is this: It was so huge it could have eaten my goldfish. Note the baby duck episode outlined in this discussion....
I think commercial goldfish farms shoot frogs because they will eat fish.
Also, in my case, my pond is only 300 gallons, so I don't need the environmental pressure.

I guess I'm safe then, the Cascadia frogs that I have here are three times smaller than my Shubunkins. I do have mosquito fish about three inches long, but the frogs seem to only catch their prey around my pond, not in the water. So far, not missing fish here.

Does anyone know of someone that makes and or sells frog traps? Or maybe 'how to' instructions on how to make a frog trap that I can leave out and come back and get later.

Happy ponding,

Rich :D

Try Jones Fish Hatchery maybe (www.jonesfish.com). Cincy Ranchu's son works there and has always been super helpful. If they don't have one they may can point you in the right direction.
Does William Tricker have anything like that? (www.tricker.com)
Good luck !!

Frogs eat above water that is why they get birds, mice, baby turtles. Hard for them to get fish in water. Frogs go from pond to pond and thus bring you unwelcomed visitors with them. I use hardware cloth over artificial ponds to keep them out.

I had know idea that frogs could bring unwanted guests with them. I don't that problem here. I have lived in this house for forty eight years of my life, and have never seen or found a frog in or around our property. Over the last year I have brought in native tree frogs and native cascadia frogs, and only the cascadia's stick around because of my pond.

Thanks for the input.

Happy ponding,
