HI,
I have couple question about Shubunkin. First, what variety of Shubunkin that quite rare in the US? Is Midnight Shubunkin are the most rare variety and hard to find in the US? i know couple breeder have some in their collection. Any other varieties of Shubunkin that breeder/collector looking for?
The reason i ask because of a chance that i will get some hand-pick goldfish from Japan. And i am looking for something that we, US goldfish enthusiasm, lack of or need in breeding purpose.
Thank you in advance.
P.S. I am now have Azumanishiki, Jikin, and Nankin on my buying list.

I don't know if I would consider the shubunkin rare, I would say it is very popular and hardy breed with US goldfish breeders. Now good bristol tails don't grow on trees, and getting good calico color is a challenge. I would say good ones are prized, but the breed itself, especially if you include common tails along with bristol tails, are common...
I do know I have talked to John Parker about developing a "halfmoon" tail out of bristols, and he is working on it...

Bristol shubunkins, Midnight shubs, London shubs are rare in the USA. There are only a few hobbyists who have and breed them.
To get these shubs, you must know hobbyists who have them. They are no petshop varieties.
Bristols and Londons are from UK and shipping these fish between UK and USA is not easy any more. The developer of Midnights passed away and now only those hobbyists who have them can produce and preserve this variety.
Japanese and American shubs are common and found in petshops.

Thank Gerard,
Sound like my assumption is right! I shouldn't get involve on the Shub.
Just heard they got some high quality in stock at the moment in Japan. And Mr. Boss ask me if anyone in US intereting on them. So i just want to get some survey before i make my final desicion.

Alot of the Japanese variety availible here but not much else . I had had plans to acquire some mid-nights untill I became primary care giver to Grandfather after stroke . Is much better now I'm looking again . Let me know an I'll see who else might want some. Thank you. :)

I saw some bristols in a fish store in Hong Kong's goldfish street this summer. the fish were from Japan, with certification. They are very beautiful, comparable or even better than those I saw from the Bristol Acquarium Society Website. But, they are selling at about $120 US dollar for a two inches fish. I would prefer a high quality ranchu at this price.

Midnights and Bristols are now available and the quality is good. I believe there are at least six lines of Bristols in the US ; Parker, Parker/Wolf, Winters, Davies, etc. I think there are at least 10 breeders...
Midnights are in a rebuilding after the inventor at Hunting Creek died about 4 years ago. But there are at least four or five breeders and Hunting Creek has them back.
American Bristols are mostly grown in Arkansas and places like Jones Fish Hatchery has a smashing selection from 4" to 12" in the spring ( April &MAy) and they are typically $7 to $20 each and they can be shipped almost anywhere.
I noticed that Dandy Orandas tried Shunkins this year and my observation is that while extremely nice , they are too expensive to import because of freight and fees...
Stick with the fancies!
