Wow, that is different. I think you are correct that this is a Koi/Ryukin combination. I can't imaging that you could get such fish in the F1 generation, but if these hybrids are fertile, maybe it is possible to keep breeding back to a Ryukin.

Thanks for sharing,

Rob

It could be a hybrid but I've been wondering for years why is long fin the only koi mutation. The are tetraploid just like gf so in theory they should be just as maliable.

It looks a lot like the blue ram cichlid mutant they sell.

The body plan is very easy to alter drastically if the gene functions early in development. There is a lime of zebrafish at work that is short bodied and missing the caudal peduncle so the anal fin wraps up and around to the dorsal fin.

Hi,

This is a c carpio carp with fused vertebrate, not a hybrid. It will be nice to the non-koi standard people to preserve this line, as it is a like a singletail Ryukin/nymph goldfish.

See article by googling and photo of fish on page 252 of article, available on PDF:
Skeletal Deformities in Cultured Common Carp Cyprinus carpio L.
Pages: 247-254
A.H. AL-HARBI
Date: 2001/9/1. Hits: 327

And a more shortened version of a comparable Red Purse carp.

As for photos of koi/goldfish hybrid, koi vet had a webpage of the rare colourful hybrids of the two, as generally they are dark grey in colour and not colourful at all.

A small vestige of it can be seen in this link:
http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://shortypen.com/koi/hybrid/hybrid.jpg&imgrefurl=http://shortypen.com/koi/hybrid/&usg=__f_KUGu6CvgU75s-0feGgQYtyRio=&h=189&w=300&sz=59&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=OxSeRcnoCmBn2M:&tbnh=73&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhybrid%2Bkoi%2Bgoldfish%26ndsp%3D20%2 6hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

Kind regards

Bill

That first link has great info but the second one is bogus. The only fish that looks like a hybrid is the first and possibly the last.

They are id'ing hybrids by a large hump. Goldfish that are over feed by being kept with precious koi get this hump. You can count the lateral line on several of the pictures and they fall perfectly into the middle of the goldfish scale count.

Here are a few humpy fish I've caught:
http://goldfishgarage.blogspot.com/2008/10/fall-sarassas.html

IIRC hybrids fall into the low end of the koi range.

Hi,

[I]"A small vestige of it can be seen in this link:
http://images.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://shortypen.com/koi/hybrid/hybrid.jpg&imgrefurl=http://shortypen.com/koi/hybrid/&usg=__f_KUGu6CvgU75s-0feGgQYtyRio=&h=189&w=300&sz=59&hl=en&start=18&um=1&tbnid=OxSeRcnoCmBn2M:&tbnh=73&tbnw=116&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhybrid%2Bkoi%2Bgoldfish%26ndsp%3D20%2 6hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1

I'll clarify further, that second link is not from koivet.

It is a link that took a photo from Koi vet, ie, the google image one, or the first photo.

Those who saw that koi vet webpage would remember (this koivet page does not appear to be available anymore) of the goldfish/koi hybrid photos. If anyone can find it, please paste the link. Thanks.

The rest are not hybrids, I agree. The guy got it wrong by going by humps.

Should go by barbels and lateral line scale count instead. Some goldfish, especially on the wild hibuna type specimens, have good humps.

Best,

Bill

I see the shipping prices like that all the time from thailand for small prices then you have to get them from their american importers which had the list of people and their phone numbers and then you get charged the huge fees. LOL I agree it was a homely looking fish and I kept looking at it trying to find photo shop distortion and I couldnt see it.
