View Full Version : Wen Growth on SVR

Please forgive me if this is the wrong place for this question.
I have a SVR that I purchased from Steve a while back. It has grown in length and girth, but it still has no really noticeable head growth. BruceP also got a SVR from Steve the same time I got mine and they were relatively the same size (I believe). The other day, Bruce showed a vid of his SVR to me and she has much more wen growth than mine does.
So, two questions: Do all SVRs have wen growth? If so, then how do I accomplish this with mine? Bruce says that it looks like mine has some wen growth, but I really can't see it.:youtellme: I will try to take a good pic of it tmrw and post it for you all to see. Thanks so much!

I've been told they need lots of good protein such as live or frozen bloodworms early on when they are really growing for good wen growth...the SVR babies that I've got right now get bloodworms 4-5 times a day plus Hikari pellets and I am starting to see wens filling in at 3 months.
It may be possible to do it another way, or some may just get the wen growth regardless of the protein, that would need to be answered by someone a whole lot more knowledgable than me....:)

What is said above is true(high protein for hood), but wen is also genetic......

All the above is true, buy a purple pak of Hakarii Saki for goldfish form Pet Mountain or others, feed twice a day and has visible headgrowth in 4 weeks. Or try bloodworms or do both:exact:

I just brought my Ranchus in from outside. While outside the water they were in was very green. In just two months head growth and body size improved dramaticly. The color as well. I had feed these fish bloodworms and saki-hikari for 6 months with little results indoors. Then two months outside on the same food and what a difference.

I've heard this so many times from others and it makes me believe that GFs would thrive the best in an outdoor pond. I've tried pump my ranchus with multiple feedings of BWs and purple, green packs of Saki and lots water changes. The fish shows minimum of head growth. I could imagine how much they could have grown with all these feedings while they are in an outdoor pond. I'm sorry if I sound negative/depressing, but this is the reality.

More water change = a lot more amount of feeding needed for balance growing. Water change help fish to grow, but where?
I recommend to do less water change or maybe every other day with same amount of feeding. Just make sure you water condition is good. This will slow down the growth rate of your fish body focus on wen growth. Saki green & BW should do the trick. I would not use Purple bag since it is less in protein and may mess with your fish color.

Sorry, I forgot mention of number of times I feed my fish per day. I have an auto fish feeder which it feeds once every 2 hours from 9AM to 9PM (that's 6 feedings with mixed of green, purple and lionhead pellets in an amount that they could finish within 2 mins). I also feed them once in the morning before 9AM (before I go to work). At least 2 times of BW after I am home at night. I do 80% w/c at least twice a week. Do you still think I should do less w/c with all the feedings?

I think more feeding. Saying 5 mins eating time on pellets. Maybe no Lionhead since pellets is big and may make swimming problem. Increase more BW amount and times per day.
2 mins eating time is so little, especially if you fish are active. I do feed around 20-25 pellets each meal to my fish (Saki Green). Do not reliable much on pellets food, do more on BW. This way you will not face swimming problem down the road. if you have time, do feed with steam egg before you going to bed and your day off. This way they keep eating all day long.
Note: you need to do water change after feeding with steam egg.

I started feeding my GFs with New Spectrum pellet ground which it was meant for tetras. And my GF started producing 6 inch long black feces that I saw them floating at the surface.
I think the new spectrum works better than green peas for several reasons.
1. it packs with nutrients
2. they are basically like pepper ground, so small that they won't clog fish's intestine.
3. easy to feed (hassle free). No need to cook and skin the peas before feeding
What do u guys think?

No experience with New life spectrum, so no comment here. I usually stick whatever the Japanese or Thai breeders feed, because that's a proven formula (bloodworms, daphnia, hikari, chanko, etc.). My kids sometimes throw tiny pieces of rice or cookie into the tank, not much I can do when the fish gobble it up quickly.
If you have R&W fish, avoid using 100% purple Saki or you'll get color smear after several months. It should be mixed with something else. All of my R&W fish develop color smear at the belly growing upward to a certain degree. Fish with pure orange or pure white body (with red wen in my case) appear protected.
Now I'm just using green Saki, I wonder if the smear would subside over the next several months...time will tell.
