Both the blacks and the red and whites are metallic fish so you won't get calicos. You'll only undo the work done to make a black ranchu.

Blacks should only be crossed to blacks or you'll spend for ever trying to make a black ranchu again.

From crossing my calico with my sakura redcap I got several black ranchus who are still black at 2 years of age.
The black fish have metallic scales. If crossed with a matte scaled fish like a calico or sakura you will get calicos. It doesn't matter what colour the metallic fish is, if you cross metallic with matte, you'll get calicos.

Are your black fish all metallic? I suspect so but who knows with goldfish genetics. Are they jet black like Pauls fish or just haven't decolored? Pictures?

Your sakura red cap had some metallic scales or was it completely matte?

Metallic is recessive to Matte and calico is the heterozygote but the hets can be highly variable from almost metallic to almost matte so sometimes they are tough to score.

Color and scales are not controlled by the same gene but I suspect true black fish is linked to metallic because I have yet to see a black fish that didn't have completely metallic scales. Any one have a picture of a black fish that is not completely metallic?

I've never seen entirely black non metallics, but the black that appears on non metallic or nacreous fish seems to be entirely more stable. There are black and white, black and red, or black, white, and red non metallics, so maybe entirely black nacreous fish are somewhere in our future?

What kind of fish was it? All the entirely black fish I've seen even through they appear flat black have metallic underneath, Like a black moor.

We may never see a matte black if the gene controlling the black that covers the fish is so closely linked to the metallic condition.

Sometimes genes are so close on a chromosome that you can not separate them or a gene that helps make one also makes the other.

David, my 2 black ranchus are all metallic. The sakura redcap has a few metallic scales, so did the calico mother. Photos of these fish are here:

... but there are no new photos of the black ones. I guess I have to put them in a tank and grab my camera, and update the site.

So they were both heterozygous (nacreous) so you should have gotten 25% metallic 50% nacreous and 25% mattes.

Is this one of the blacks:
http://www.personainternet.com/sabine/ about half way down?

Great site, I'd love to seen some new pictures.

That is about what I got.
I think that is one of the fish at about 1 month, but they are really black now.
Not the perfect ranchu like the ones shown here by King of Ranchu - those fish are top notch :)! Congratulations - I wish I had a chance to get a ranchu like those!
