Gurus,
i would like to know if we need to put oxygen in the bag when shipping fish overnight.
I understand it is always a good idea. But is it necesary?

Have anyone ship the fish without oxygen?

Thanks in advanced.

Yes, its absolutely necessary (unless you are using breathable bags). Starve fish for 3 days before shipping. Bags should contain sufficient water to keep the fish wet, no more than a third of the bag should be filled with water, then fill up with oxygen. I have little personal experience of using breathable bags and as far as I am aware they are not available in the UK. Breathable bags were however used to transport about 100 of my baby Ranchu within the States several years ago and all were dead on arrival.

woops

John, sorry someone fell for those bags.
They are thin, very fragile, and what the h3ll are they supposed to breathe,
sealed up inside a box?

Judge, you can always run by a welding supply and borrow a squirt if you need to. Adding another squirt of an ammonia binder is a pretty good idea too. Or even Bag Buddies if you can find them.

Bag Buddies:

I use them .. :)

Your own oxygen supply can be as simple as getting a Mapp Gas kit.

Yes add Oxygen unless it is overnight delivery, I have used breathable bags for years and under some conditions they die without O2

With one of these (http://www.midwestsupplies.com/oxygen-injection-system-without-oxygen-tank.html) you can use the small red oxygen tanks available at home depot or the like.

It's expensive for regular shipper but it's easy and you can travel with valve and pick up oxygen anywhere.

I just shipped over 100 of my goldfish from Calgary to Toronto in Kordon breathable bags and lost only 1 goldfish! They were in breathable bags in a stryrofoam box for just over 8 hours!

Many occasions when overnight became two day or three day. Use oxygen and pack as two day

We ship hundreds of fish a year, always plan for a delay in transit time. it doesn't take much more effort, you will be glad you did if something happens. We always pack all fish so they should be fine for a extra day!:exact:

and BlueBelly, don't you know if put (LIVE FISH) on it, that they play soccer with the box that much more! But in the event you get someone who cares always a good idea to put live fish on box!

Definitely a good idea to err on the side of caution...
After several "right on time" deliveries I had a UPS 2nd day turn into 5 and during very cool late fall weather, too. I was very thankful that the shipper did such a thorough prep and packing job.....it could have been really ugly otherwise.
