Definately enjoyed them! Handspawning looks like it would be the way to go for a higher concentration of viable eggs. I would be worried about hurting my fish though. I wonder if they would ever do seminars on it at koi and goldfish shows?

You only kill fish if the female is not ready and you are persistant. Actually it is much easier on the females, because once the eggs are expelled over one or two ejection the maes generally leave them alone. Rememebr, only enough water to keep them comfortable on their side, always male first then stir and then the female and stir( with your hand)

I think that's why Bekko (Steve) explained once before I think he called it (dry stripping) or something like that. Just for the record the male was milked first but added second.

Bekko is a dry method, mine is a wet method which is easier

I always handspawn my fish after they have started spawning by themselves.
Never hold it as long in my hand like in the video, and never dry.
If you do that, you have to be quick... under your microscope you can see that goldfish sperm don't live much longer than 1 minute!

Watching that video you can understand why the adults look like hell and are covered in fungus two days after dry stripping.
There is another wet stripping method for round-body varieties of modest size. Hold the female in one hand and the male in the other hand. While holding them under water with the abdomens facing each other, milk them both simultaneously using your thumb to stroke the abdomen. Not as difficult as it sounds, but don't bother trying it with large hardy varieties because you cannot hang on to them with one hand.

Gary was just at my house and I put him to work hand spawning some fish. Good job. If his technique is not on this site it should be.

This is what I do but it becomes very difficult when the fish are big orandas with long dorsal fins.
