lionchus usually come from china where as true ranchus come from japan and thailand. The chinese combine characteristics of both lionhead and ranchu into their fish. The chinese started out with the traditional japanese ranchu but then bred other traits into them such as the lionhead like wen growth and rounder fuller bodies. Lionchus are always meant to be observed from the side. The chinese also introduced other colors such as blue, bronze, chocolate, calico, and black into the ranchu strain. I believe the japanese only recognize all red, red and white, and, white as acceptable colors for ranchu. This is a very simple answer I am sure others can provide more detail definitions.

Yes, Japanese ranchu are traditionally bred to be viewed from the top, and swimming is an important part of the ranchu. They have longer bodies, as well as the buffalo" head as far as wen development. Broad rectangluar heads with distinct funtan development. See the pics that Paul posted.....

BTW, I am not downgrading the chinese developed lionchu, just trying to educate so we develop both types distinctly...

Nice Chinese strain. I like your orange/black one, very nice body. My biggest chu in our show tank (the redhead) is also from Tommy, she is everybody's favorite at home.

Nice,

If you breed these you can select lionheadas and ranchu from the same spawning it is really a cool trick!
