I was under the impression that there was no such thing as a black TVR but I ran into this on the net. Not only is it black it was created in Japan.

It's not that there aren't any "black" Ranchu in Japan, it's simply that they are not popular with SERIOUS hobbyists. As a race Japanese are very traditional and Ranchu are "red, or red and white, or even all white. A black Ranchu was exhibited at the Jinchu Kai show in Yokohama last year but it was not ranked and nobody showed any interest in it. Several years ago I saw a delightful Panda Ranchu in Yokohama but my "teacher" immediately dismissed it as a "Chinese pet" notwithstanding that it had been born and bred in Japan. Perhaps times will change but my impression it that SERIOUS Japanese hobbyists put other coloured Ranchu in the same category as calico Jikin and calico Tosakin and do not keep them, but that is not to say that they are not produced and sold commercially and the black fish pictured certainly looks like a good Ranchu to me!

Hi Harzan
It has to be you!!! Now the Nankin is a variety which I totally fail to see any point in. However as it is a very traditional old Japanese variety I would be very surprised indeed if it had been bred in calico. I have no real personal knowledge of the Nankin but the metallic red markings on a white background seem remarkably similar on all the fish judging from photos I have seen of fish at Nankin shows and in breeders establishments. If this red and white metallic pattern is significant then of course, like the Jikin, it will not curry interest or favour from its diehard devotees.
Must admit though I am pleased and surprised that "calico" is now in your vocabulary. Have you now passed through your "blue" phase and realised that goldfish are more attractive when they are COLOURED???

Yes John,

I love calicoes! Blues are still very much a favored color for me. I have had a bunch of Blue Egg Phoenix this year from Gerard's share at the last BS.

BTW...how is your favorite fish doing...your Blue Oranda???:)

Personally, I love blue veils.. Its seems to go with that breed more than any other...

Oh, I like nankins too, in white and red. I think the breed loses alot of it's charm if it is was calico.

"Harris" is doing fine Harris but he prefers food to the Ladies. To him, life is all about growing.

Don't go over to the "blue" side Dan, I can only cope with one Harris! Now how about a metallic blue and white Nankin - ugly or what?

Actually John....Blue and White or Black and white will be next for my nankin fun...if the calicoes work out. So far the long pointy nose seems to be there. Do not be surprised if they surface in the next couple seasons....:):):)

Well, maybe a panda nankin would look better, that is with black instead of blue.
