View Full Version : My TVR update

I hurt my back recently, and hence no complete WC for now to avoid more trouble. This is 50-60% WC after vaccuming. The new water is very cold around 10 degrees lower than the existing temp, so I let it in slowly. Fish are a bit sluggish because they don't like sudden cold water, but they can handle it…my back can't.>:)
My longest fish, Ruby, is exactly 7 inches (17.5 cm) by measurement today from head to tip of tail. The shortest one is Marble, also R&W, just shy of 6 inches. I'm particularly happy with the wen size on Flame (white head with small red patch), who had very little head growth 6 months ago.

Lookin good as usual Suphi. The fish in our 560g. goldie pond/tank all huddle at the surface in the sun to warm up when I change water. It would be nice to have a spare tank to age the water before putting it in with the fish but we dont so the fish will just have to shiver. lol

Just wonder, Did you de-chlorine the water first? and transfer slowly to the tank?

you can get a connection at home depot that will connect to a sink and to a hose you then can run hot and cold together.i have been doing this for years.you dont want to shock your fish all the time

We have well water where I live, i.e. chlorine-free, so it's direct from tap. That's why I do almost daily WC, taking full advantage of it.

Yeah, traction treatment works wonder for people with disc disease. It's supposed to allow the disc to move back in place. That's my next step if physical therapy doesn't work...but so far so good as my problem is still mild.

Suphi I don't know what kind of back problem you have but I had/have a herniated disc in my upper back. The head and neck stretcher was great.
The bad news is it take a while for your back to heal the good news is it will get better. Oh I almost forgot if it is a herniated disc a non medical remedy is vitamin C. I was on a pain killer called Tramadol this stuff was great it's like a strong advil and I had zero side affects.
I hope this helps a bit.
Don
suphi

I have mild herniated disc, the problem is more of a radiculitis (which is the release of inflammatory chemicals from the process) than nerve compression. I don't even take pain meds as I have no pain now, but I just have to be careful not to put my back into certain positions that can aggravate it.

John, I wish you'd go into TVR full-steam since you'll probably be more successful than any of us. Imagine the Hubsch bloodline that people will still be talking about 40-50 years from now? It should be worth it. (not to mention that I might also be able to bum a fish or two off you in the future, lol--NY is a short drive for me).

Ok, here I go again......LOL
The desired traits on a SVR can be achieved on a TVR. A good ranchu is a good ranchu. Now one trait that some like on SVRs, that is very short body. But that leads to swiming problems alot, or swim bladder issues. Though there seems to be a trend toward shorter body TVRs. But it is about balance anyway....
The real trick is that the most difficult feature on TVR to achieve thru breeding and care is the tail/peduncle. This feature weeds down the number of usable fish per spawn way down. Alot of these fish still look okay from the side... Boom SVR, which make a more commerically viable fish. But to a breeder that wants a challenge, why not work on the whole package?
My 2 cents.... again....LOL

Suphi, did you get much rain last night? If so did it cause any problems for your outdoor tubs?

Glad to hear it. It finally started raining here around noon, and is still going. A little over an inch last I checked two hours ago.
I moved my fish in a few weeks ago when the night time temps got down to the 40's, now it has been warm for 10 days... Oh well, the fish put on some nice growth and color outside while they were there.

It's too cold to leave them outside now. So, I'm stuck with 5 large ranchu in a 40G coffee table tank with wife not allowing me to do anything else. This means partial water change at least once a day. I also have to cut down the feeding to avoid problem with water quality.

Any plans to move in the near future? Maybe you can convince her to move to a house with a basement or a garage. Of course you might have to spin it differently to show a benefit to the whole family:)

I've been trying to fatten up Sapphire (white head). Now feeding 4x a day with daily 70+% WC...plus complete WC weekly, else water starts foaming up like soap bubbles. He's a bit fatter now compared to the last video but still on the skinny side, I guess other fish are hogging all the food. It's been a constant work trying to balance water quality and adequate feeding for these guys as they really do like clean water.
They also can't stay in that holding tub for more than 20 min...starting to sulk, so my complete WC has to be done quickly. That tub isn't small, btw, the fish are just bigger than they were last year. As soon as the old water is drained and the new one goes in enough I would put them back in the tank and continue filling.
Ideally, I would isolate Sapphire and do powerfeeding to my liking. In the real world, no space.

Oh I get treated very well at home, and my wife is very supporting of my many time consuming and pricey hobbies. But if/when it comes down to a win or lose situation I still concede more often then not. I have been trying to convince her for years that backyard feathered egg machines are a great idea... she doesn't agree. But then it comes down to choosing your battles (and dreams). I can happily live with paying a few bucks for a dozen large single cells at the grocery store, but don't know what I would do without my fishroom, water changes and live food cultures :exact:

maybe try:
floating a large plastic colander with her in it during private feedings where give her plenty of wheat germ food to bulk her up, but be careful not to let her bloat. the others won't have access to her food so she can feed slowly if is her habit. you can power feed her in the same tub without affecting the others regime. when she has finished, let her free. maybe feed her first and the group after you let her out and maybe she will eat more of the other food as dessert. one tank, two menus and two regimes.

The Itoh-Kudo was raised from BBR (1 mo old), same batch as several people here in the forum. The rest I bought between junior and Tosai. These imports can be $$$, that's why my wife gets ticked off whenever I wanted to buy more.

Real feeding is below. It took them around 10 min to finish but they are full for the next 3-4 hours.

Just for curiosity, what kind of pellet are you feeding? From my point of view it looked like Saki Hikari but darker than any pellet I have ever seen. I'm just asking because your fish look so amazing, anything you feed is something worth trying out with my BBR's once they are ready. Thanks!

Showing my outdoor equipments and the new (crude) automated water changing system. It's been running well for the past 3 days.
I'm getting a new female ranchu in a few days, finally. >:)

So if I'm right the only thing automated is the water timer correct?
Looking forward to your new female. :>

Yes, it is very handy especially in the peak afternoon when I'm at work and need to get some fresh water into the tub to reduce the high temperature. It should be a lifesaver during my upcoming vacation also.
I'm very excited about the new fish, although secretly wish I could afford the more expensive one. May be Paul will sell it cheap when he has to leave for Thailand. >:)

Alright I see now so basically no need to drain the old water and when the water timer comes on it will just mix with the same water and the overflow takes care of the rest. I think it should work well when you're on vacation. :yess:
BTW I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. I have yet to get my first one. Lol

I think she is more exciting than you, P'Suphi!
She is very active and healthy. I guess it's no more time for me to spawn her. I notice her stomach get softer. Maybe when she get to you, she might spawn!

You and Gary have been very productive this year. I'm going to try some breeding hopefully soon. I think handspawning would be best for me. Not sure how to tell when the males are ready, though. Got any tips?

I would just test them, squeeze some milt out. With males they seem to be ready most of the time. The females are the frustrating ones.. Yours are healthy and ready to go I bet.

For some reason, I got home early today. >:)
She's still pretty stressed, sulking and darting at times, but already starts to look for food. Swimming posture is very good.
I already started oxolium, Prazi to be added tomorrow.

Not sure how they're gonna breed, my Oya males are 4-5 times bigger. Hopefully I can start powerfeeding soon and get her outdoor to speed up the growth.

One of Paul's seeders. The cheapest one that I could afford, but very good potential. Paul still has the very best fish (both male and female) from this batch though. His next spawn should be awesome judging from the seed fish that he has.

Eheim feeder came in today. It's very nice and more sophisticated than Dazs feeder, but is limited to 4 feedings per day. I find the lid setting more flexible than Dazs and refill is easier without spills, but I'll have to see whether the feeding amount remains consistent when the content is low.

They are by far my favorite. I've got 30 of them!
They are fairly consistent with purple saki or lionhead or oranda but if you get up into the mini koi size feeds they do slow down a bit as they get empty.
when you do breed them suphi, sign me up, I think she is really fantastic and once bred to your fish should really produce some nice fry.

Okay, but at this time I'm not too enthus about breeding yet as the size difference is kind of a bit much. I'm going to focus on grooming and growing this fish first.

Had to break QT the other day for around 30 min, needed a place to hold fish emergently. Some small animal got inside my fish house and caused a huge mess. Fish were ok as you can see but I had to do emergency WC and major clean up.
They've been medicated as part of my routine before mixing new and old fish, so I think it'll be ok.

After two days of powerfeeding. Eheim feeder lets out around 25 Saki pellets at smallest opening, 4 times a day. So, she consumes around 100 pellets a day. I gave my previous tosai similar amount in the past, just in 5 separate feedings instead of 4. Let's see what happens in a month.
Update: will probably cut the food to 60-70 a day.
she already looks like she put on some girth. remember i first to receive some of their offspring

Hi suphi,
Congrats on the new addition--she's very pretty. I got 2 of Kawai x Tashiro as well, tho I'm not sure if they are from the same spawn, and 2 of Takao x Tashiro from Paul. I'm glad to hear your fish didn't get hurt by the intruder. I'm wanting to take my TVRs outside soon, but I need to be very careful to set something up that's raccoon-proof. All of your fish are so adorable! Makes me want a coffee table tank...
Hey Suphi,
Amazing fish! I like your blue tub. If you don't mind my asking, what kind is it and where did you get it?
