Anybody done it (fish in bathtub)? I need to bring my TVR indoor this winter and my old 40G isn't going to hold 6 fish (two Oya-sized, three near-Oya-sized and one Tosai fish). I could buy a new tank but don't really want to spend, plus WC will be super-easy with fish in the bathtub.

I'm thinking either using a pondliner over the bathtub or just put the fish in with plain rubber drain stopper. My major concern is water leak. What would you guys do?

Hi Suphi,

In my opinion fish would be fine in a bathtub. I would take the chain off the plug though.

Best wishes Billy.

The fish should be fine.

The wife probably not as much...

You might want to caculate volume of water in the tub though. Then let us know when you do.

you have small kids, no?. scary considering the drain. also if the seal leaks the water drains… how confident are you that it will always hold water? my tub slowly loses water. considering the value of your fish, i would not go this route based on my experience and luck.

in 3 years keeping ranchu

i have lost only 1 to infection
2 when a pump failed
1 got caught in a skimmer and never recovered from injury
2 in plumbing related problem resulting in no water in the tub
3 to a hungry syphon whose cage i forgot to replace

i am 8 times more likely to lose a fish to mechanical failure than disease (all be it some user errors contributed).

i personally would not risk it in the tub by itself. i would get a 150gal rubbermade. set it over the tub and drain into the tub for easy cleaning if you have a spare bathroom. i don't see how you would drain the tub with a pond liner in it without pumping to a sink or something. just seems like it makes more work than it saves. rubbermade does not need the tub and can go anywhere (anywhere your wife agrees to that is). in the summer use the tub to culture duckweed, mosquito larvae and daphnia in your back yard or for growing out fry.

be careful.

I used to keep my lion cap orandas in a bathtub, which was actually used as a stock tank... outdoors and it had a plug. Easy to clean, kept a de-icer on it in the winter, fish were fat and healthy.

When wintering over would I need light? I'm looking to put a stock tank or two in my large shop/garage for wintering over, there is some supplemental heat but not much, and dim light from the overhead flourescents which are on for the dogs. Do I need anything else?

Those rubber ducks are really difficult to breed, and if you can get them to the young never seem to have the quality of the parents lol.

Suphi -

Just buy a rubbermaid stock tank for $150.

I can just see the visa add now...

Rubbermaid stock tank $150
Top View Ranchu $1,800
Knowing your fish won't go down the drain... Priceless.

Most worrisome to me is all the residue and soap-scum present in a tub. Those layers can be very difficult to scrub off, or so I've heard.....

I actually have a 150G rubbermaid tub outdoor, just can't put it indoor or inside that bathroom...it's too big and too deep. I do frequent WC/scrubbing/cleaning and that would be too much work.

A shallow 60G tub or something would be enough to hold my fish for a few months with daily WC.

rubbermade also has a 50 gal. same size, just more shallow. they are about $85.

the local feed store has plenty of sizes of troughs from 20 gal to 20 feet in diameter. might be worth looking around a farm supply if there are any in your vicinity.

Actually, I still have another fiberglass ranchu tub that is collecting dust. If it fits in that bathroom it would be perfect, it probably won't tho. :confuse:

Plenty of options and a few more months to decide...

I could also give one fish away, and probably fit 5 fish in my 40G with daily WC.

Did someone say free fish??? ROFL

Actually, setting up that other glass ranchu tub sounds like the best idea if you can fit it in.

sounds like its time to build that fish house disguised as a potting shed.

don't know why this popped into my head today, but here you go if you are still toying with the idea.

you could build a wood frame that fits on top of the tub then set in the pond liner. the drain is no longer a risk, but you still have access to it for water changes with a syphon.

rubbermaid in the garage would still be easier in my opinion.

Sounds like a circus. Will there be poodles with tutus dancing on their back legs balancing a ball on their nose? ;)
