It depends on who's making the comments.

It's a fair game. Some of my friends don't even like my ranchu, they are grossed out by *fish with head tumors*.

I agree..beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but then you gotta think of quality of life for this fish....yes it may be getting the optimal conditions, but all it does is sit there all day long doing nothing, honestly..thats a bit much. But, hey if thats what they were going for then congrats to them, that is one BIG fish!!!

I always thought it was "Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder". :)

I think the comments were not about beauty but about cruelity.

Lim,
Do you mean the comments made in the audio portion of the video?
I have a hard time discerning what they are saying with high background noise, some thing about "I am telling you.... a lot of them cannot bother... we all follow the book, follow the rules..... whatever lah" etc...

Like NYgold said, it depends on who is talking. Since you know what you are doing, why do you care? Just ignore them. :exact:

hes adorable but for someone who knows nothing of those fish it would be seen as cruel, just as some see the ranchu or oranda with wen so big they are blind is cruel. what they dont realize is because of years of breeding that is how its going to be, just like all the mini dogs they breed now and all their health problems, at least your fish is healthy. to me its just like a cat or dog that uses a walker or a pet that is deformed in someway, they still have happy lives in their own way. they learn to live a happy life around it, doesnt mean they shouldnt live or that they cant be happy and loved. thats my 2 cents. i kindof feel like they made u feel guilty and sad but dont, just think of how well u treat him and what a good life u give him and if you feel that u do so then tell them to stick it where the sun dont shine :-*

most pearlscales I have seen can still swim, to a point, this one can't even move....even in optimal conditions this isn't fair to the breed, they are still supposed to be able to swim, or at least I thought that was the point of a fish...to swim and look nice while doing so.. i agree....is it healthy?

Remember these guys were originally created to please/amuse us in the first place. Ranchu was made to portray muscular fish with graceful swimming posture. For pearscale, the purpose was probably entirely different.

I find it hard to believe that a fish would be designed to NOT swim.

It is not uncommon to see such things when competition is envolved.
When the competitive juices are flowing we tend to loose sight of the big picture. When people start out keeping fish they are mostly looking for nice fish to swim gracefully in their tank, tub, pond, etc. It's hard to keep the balance between competing and enjoying the hobby.
I fished recreationally for many years then I started to fish competitivley I had some success but in the end it wasn't much fun. It was no longer relaxing and enjoyable it was more of a job than fun.
I understand the standards of goldfish and there importants they play a huge role in understanding and enjoying the hobby. But a fish that can hardly move and just bottom sits like a golfball with eyes isn't what I enjoy seeing in a goldfish. Just my opinion.
P.S. I do think Pearlscales are beautiful fish, I just like them better when they can move.

Lim,
My two cents is "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I am not a fan of Pearlscale and know nothing about what is considered a good Pearlscale.
My personal taste is it is overweight and I prefer it to be able to move around.

However, the comments that it is disgusting or cruel I would think is rather simplistic and ignorant.

BTW, is this "Fatty Weng" yours?

Oh my apologies! I was referring to the written comments in Youtube.

This is Fatty Weng and it is mine. It was a very good swimmer, always swimming always exploring and searching while it was at my home. The problem was that this video was taken at Aquarama 2009 and the temperature of the water was around 20 degrees C. Fatty Weng has for all his life live in water temperature of about 28 degrees C.

The problem of him not swimming well in the video was because of the temperature. Infact he never survive after the competition and that is why Aquafair 2010 in KL, Malaysia is providing heaters for all the tanks.

The problem lies in the temperature of the competition site.

Lim,
In that case I think it displays an extraordinary expression of this breed and is to be applauded. I am sorry to hear you lost Fatty Weng after the competition... That is surely devastating...

the comments on the video pissed me off. i really erks me when the idiots of the world get a soapbox—ignorant is being kind.

any post on youtube of a fancy goldfish brings out the "poor fish", "that's disgusting" comments. drives me crazy. fatty Weng was an awesome fish. i threw down a rebuttle comment for you. now you do have one comment that is "fair".

good work, sorry for your loss.

I was at a Japanese festival where there was a large beautiful calico demekin on display in a bowl and other fancies (Ranchu, Oranda and such) in a small tank. I overheard this girl saying "Wow! What kinda primitive fishes are these. They look like goldfish but SO weird." to those in the tank. Then to the demekin in the bowl, she kept saying to the "Poor thing, I know you are dying, aren't you?", while the demekin swims gracefully in the bowl...sigh...

While goldfish is well-known, fancies are not and the appreciation of fancies is still much "younger" than in the East. These kind of reaction is just plain ignorance of the public and it is goldfish enthusiasts' role in educating and spreading the appreaciation of what fancy goldfish is all about.

The scary part is when people of that mindset try to pass laws to control/end our hobby. We must remain on guard.

like the Italian law that made it illegal to keep a goldfish in a "bowl" because it gave the goldfish a warped view of the outside world and therefore was cruel. are you kidding me?

anyone seen the glass Koi pearls that allow pond fish to get above the water level and look around.

does not look like the fish are disturbed, but rater like they are enjoying it.

if i had to keep a fish in limited water, a bowl would be at the top of the list given that it has the best circulation and oxygenation. silly law and completely unfounded reasoning.
