Hello All,

I just took some videos of the Matuyamas that I bred this spring. These are the same group that I took to the Breeders Social. They are now 6 mos. old.

Thanks for looking, Rob

It would be great to see how yours are doing. I am seeing better development this year than in years past. Same line of fish, but I now realize that they can't spend their first three months in a twenty gallon tank and still turn out alright. The shallower water and larger stock tank, plus lots of food makes a difference.

How shallow is the water? Mine have been in a standard 125.

Rob,

These look great! I really like the scales, penduncle, color and overall shape. Very nice work!

I am impressed with the headgrowth, of the two Matsuyama you left at the BS, one has huge headgrowth. I agree, shallow water is the deal of the day...

Are you feeding Saki or something else?

These Matsuyamas are really nice! How is the back line? I remember the Mats tend to look pretty good from the top but backlines not so good.

Hey Gary, Thanks. They are getting some Saki, but I mixed it with a bag of Hikari Lionhead. Saki has the probiotics, so I thought by mixing, I could extend the benefits of the probiotics. They are also getting Omega One pellets, a high protein spirulina pellet from Brine Shrimp Direct, and lots of gel food.

Seeing how Suphi, Dan and Fred were able to get such massive growth out of their BBR, I decided to really push the food on this batch, and it does make a difference in the headgrowth. There seems to be a window of opportunity, and if you don't grow them fast enough, the window sort of closes, and you'll never get great headgrowth. The reality though is that I will only have enough room to raise about 6 big ones a year.

Cheers,

Rob

Hi Gerard,

This group has pretty good backs, but that has varied from year to year. I think a lot has to do with the quality of the spawn and how the fry and eggs are handled, and of course, the culling skills of the breeder. The female parent of this spawn was an Oya, and the eggs were very uniform in size and the fertility of the spawn was good. In this case there seemed to be fewer deformities in the fry. I have had other spawns (like Tosai spawns )where the eggs were small, and the fry didn't eat as well, and the the mortality was high. The survivors of the poor spawns often have bad backs.

I have a 50 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank. I think the water is about 8 inches deep. Right now there are six fish in there. It is filtered, and I change water about twice a week.

Thanks for posting your pics. I think you need to feed more if you want to see better growth on these fish.

Cheers,

Rob

I think I need to confine them. They are getting stuffed to the gills with auto and hand feedings of saki and lionhead.

The tank they are in encourages lap swimming and schooling.

How long are yours? I think mime are right at 3 inches.

Mine are around 5" right now. I have others from this spawn that I am keeping in a 40 gallon tank, and they are quite a bit smaller with almost no head growth. So I think the confinement/shallow water theory is pretty good.

Great gob on grooming these, they are looking good. My favorite of the group is the white and orange one.

Thanks! I like that one too. I am hoping it is a male. I have several older females that I like, but I need new males to breed them to.

I picked up several nice Matsuyama tosai from spring spawnings from Gary. Especially a couple nice females. I am going to cross them with Hattori males this spring. I guess we will see if it works.

I have been trying out just an airstone no filtration. So far so good. Low stocking density and watch thing closely and seems to work just fine.

I have a homemade PVC siphon tube that flows into an overflow box that hangs on the side, and then to a wet/dry filter on the floor. I also have a large sponge filter in the tub.

I got some of Gary's Matsuyama X Oishi. Some of these have a more pronounced funtan, so I will cross with my other Matsuyamas. I look forward to seeing your cross.

I think that one has the best head, but I don't like the tail very much.
