This is one variety of goldfish that I love to keep for the following reasons.

1. It is very cheap in Singapore and I have bought them for as little as S$1.20(US$0.85) each.

2. It is very easily available in Singapore.

3. It is probably one of the toughest variety of goldfish to keep. I mean just keeping them alive.

4. It is even tougher to keep them to look like a ball.

5. It is probably the only variety of goldfish that is not only cheap but probably the only cheap variety of goldfish that one can keep and have hope to win in competition. I have won first position in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia with this variety.

6. You don't require much space to keep them well. I am keeping about 10 pieces in a 100 lit water tub.

look nice... you have said everything about the fish except how you groom it. :) Please let us know...I have no idea if there is anything special except that it is kept in my 100 lit tub together with several other smaller pearlscales and fed the usual way. FYI the tub used to be one of those landscape fountain that my wife bought some 6 years ago with a build-in filter. Her fancy for landscaping died a long time ago and I have since inherited the tub.

Here is a picture of another one that I used to own and was raised in the same tub.

I was going to ask you how shallow is shallow.

I read about shallow water here:

I dont know if they are talking about that particular BW pearlscales in that thread or not.

In your experience, does depth matter?

Do you have any problem with their abiltity to swim straight. I currently have a crowned pearlscale that swims in spirals when excited, like at feeding time. If not excited or startled she seems to swim fine.

I do not have any problem with them. I have 15 pieces at the moment and not a single one of them have swimming problem.

What is the ideal angle for a pearlscale's caudal fin to be held at?

The ideal angle is the one that pleases your heart. The one that makes you wanting to sit in front of your tank for hours.

GOLFBALL PEARLSCALES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
OMG THEY ARE SO DARNED CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
wow, these ones are REALLY round
pearlscales do tend to have swimbladder problems, which would be why golfballs are hard to keep, i'm guessing
they are nice fish, especially if you're looking for that extreme of rotundness
(i have a video of these at home, we watch it and just sit there ans say "awwww" for about an hour)
nice to know they're easily available somewhere, i haven't seen a pearlscale in any local petstore in about 4 years
(i can't think why they wouldn't sell, though)
