Two home grown duck eggs, soy beans and garlic ran through a garlic press. Scramble in the bowl, then double boiled to cook, stirring occasionally, with the lid on.

What does everybody think about eggs as a food source?

I use eggs but just the white part of the hard boiled egg.
When I want to give my fish high protein (on the cheap) I use egg whites, tuna (in water) and GW.

I included the yolks to take advantage of the good fats and pigments in the yolk. Blende together they do not fowl the water nearly as bad as if the yolk is separate.
Does anyone know the Japanese or Chinese for steamed eggs?

That seems like a big recipe, David. How many days should it keep in the fridge? Are duck eggs higher in fat?
Ichthius

A few days atleast. I'll likely make a larger batch and freeze.
Yes they are higher in fat but it's not all bad fat. The fats are largely coming from the garden, duckweed and bug in the lawn.
I'm not going to over do it, just a supliment. I might experiment on some culls with heavier feedings.
This is also an experiment as a delivery system for garlic or fish drugs.

I actually have afew duck eggs and I'm going to feed this recipe to my beautiful & happy new BBRs. They are hungry little critters!
Is raw garlic bad for fish and cooked garlic good? Do your ducks stay out of the fish ponds?

I think the raw garlic is more effective at cleaning out the guts. Does anyone know something different? I guess it cooks a bit while steaming.
All my ponds are above ground and netted. Occasionally they'll get up on the bigger pond but they have many of their own duck height water features. If I haven't fed them duckweed in a while they'll fly up to thise tubs and chow down.

David what you're looking for is called allicin (diallyl thiosulfiniate or diallyl disulphide-oxide), that's what you want out of the garlic.
It's very unstable and can break down even when warm, don't heat it.
Just use fresh garlic and a press and mix it in last.

I was curious what breed of duck you keep, and why? I have been thinking about getting ducks next year.

Ancona ducks. http://donaldstreetducks.blogspot.com/
They are a heirloom meat and egg breed. We have two pairs. The give us two eggs a day. Last year the made eggs from labor day through memorial day and took the summer off because we let them hatch.
If you can hatch your own id be glad to send you some hatching eggs or the people we got them from sell ducklings but thy are usually back ordered as they have the dave holdered's broodstock now.
They are the best yard ducks! They forage allday long and all night if we leave them
Out to midnight. Way better than chickens and they help complete the backyard goldfish cycle. They use the goldfish water which is then used for duckweed and daphnia/mosquito production.

Hi Dave,
The best recipe that I known of regarding "Steam Egg" are as follow;
Eggs
Baby Milk Formula powder
Fish Sauce (Squid Brand) (http://www.squidbrand.com/squideng/)
Water
Fish food pellet
For some reason, they are not use for Top-view ranchu.
I can't remember why, but nobody feed steam egg to TVR.

Tanks Paul. Squid sauce was in my batch, but I forgot add that to the post, I'll go back and add that to the blog post.
I live fish sauce, it's one of my favorite condiments even when I'm not eating Thai food.
If you figure out why not to use on tvr please let us know.

David,
How much room do the ducks need and are they noisey? Easy to care for? Always thought what it would be like to have ducks...

We have a 100x100 lot and a little more than half is our back yard, with fish and vegetable garden. They have free range from about 8 am to about midnight. They have a 4x4 duck hut and 4x8 pen. Daily maintenance is just a few minutes a day to check food and water and a bit more to change bedding. We use the deep bedding method (just keep putting down straw) that is cleaned out monthly or so a bit more frequenly in the summer.
They are not noisy and you can have a drake or two to protect the ducks. They quack a but when laying eggs and when thy want out.
About half their diet is grain and the rest is lawn grass, bugs and chopped up kitchen scraps.
They are great for organic gardening as the eat all the bugs and left over garden produce. We had a wet spring summer and the strawberries often went bad. The ducks gladly eat them.
I have a 50 rubbermaid stock tank as their main bath and the bottom of a plastic barrel as another little water spot that moves around the lawn so one area doesn't get to trashed.
Another great thing over chickens is these guys are thwarted by an 18 inch fence. I made up 4, 6, and 8 foot fence panels with mental fencing and bamboo so we can rotate their access depending on the weather or to keep them off the patio.
They are the puppy dogs of the poulty world where Chechens are more like cats.

If I wanted to add powdered spirulina to the formula, what amount would you suggest, David?
Ichthius

Hi Jeff
Sorry I missed your post.
I'd try a couple tablespoons. It seems to go right through the fish so excess might just be wasted.
I'm adding flax seed meal to provide fiber and omega 3s. Spirulina seems like a good idea.

I really like that this formula has no/needs no gelatin. I hate that crap. I like the flax seed idea. I saw a formula a long time ago that included a mens adult high-potency vitamin. Are there benefits to be had with the addition of vitamins?

You might need to add vitamines if you are trying to make a staple feed but I'm using this in rotation with fbw, saki, lionhead, master mix and the scramble so I doubt they will be missing anything after eating most of these everyday.

I like the fresh addition of minerals and metals from a multivitamin. My fish also respond to large doses of E and C

Wait, David, I think I have a kitchen sink over here for you:D
But seriously I really like the addition of the shrimp: great idea. My last batch included some Nori.
