I have heard Chinese Ranchus from a certain region being famous for its size and have seen pictures of them but none like the pictures in this thread from FynnMood. I just love the Curve and stoutness of these fish....
Please enjoy. I would like to see the comparison picture with the biggest Japanese Ranchu...

The size is impressive at 24 cm. My biggest fish is only around 19.

The one pic in the tank, I dont care for. Head too small for tail, lacks balance. Bigger is not aways better....

I think you picked the only one out of the many that he has and gave comment on it. The rest are perfectly fine.
For the size of the fish with the impressive body shape and head I would say its A++. We can hardly find that kind of quality and size here.
I just wanted to show how impressive the fish are and how skillful the person who bred and raised these fish.

They are so big, they could serve as food fish too! But that would be a very expensive dish!>:)

Indonesia has always been famous for its gigantic goldfish especially ranchus, ryukins and orandas. I had one giant unique oranda once. Its wen was so impressive and it has a nice tail and a balanced body.

I gave my opinion on the fish I could clearly see. You cant see much about a fish in someones hand....Especially ranchu.

I saw a Thai red SVR roughly this size when I visited Paul 2 years ago. They are rare but not as rare as you might think, especially among farm-raised fish where these guys are fed all day long.

I got 5 of R/W Jap Lionhead that size in from my last November shipment. And sold by that weekend after arrival. Those Jap Lionhead that I got are way better in quality compare to those Black one! Now I have reserved more of Jap Lionhead that size are bigger than those Black from China...
I also got almost 12" Jap lionhead in 2008. She was the biggest Jap Lionhead I have ever seen or touch.
And you can't hold her by just one hand!
I wish I have picture or video of them....

They are totally grotesque. Fat with little hood growth.

My vacabulary is not that good. I googled the meaning: :)
The word grotesque comes from the same Latin root as "Grotto", meaning a small cave or hollow. The original meaning was restricted to an extravagant style of Ancient Roman decorative art rediscovered and then copied in Rome at the end of the 15th century. The "caves" were in fact rooms and corridors of the Domus Aurea, the unfinished palace complex started by Nero after the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64, which had become overgrown and buried, until they were broken into again, mostly from above.
In modern English, grotesque has come to be used as a general adjective for the strange, fantastic, ugly, incongruous, unpleasant, or disgusting, and thus is often used to describe weird shapes and distorted forms such as Halloween masks. In art, performance, and literature, grotesque, however, may also refer to something that simultaneously invokes in an audience a feeling of uncomfortable bizarreness as well as empathic pity. More specifically, the grotesque forms on Gothic buildings, when not used as drain-spouts, should not be called gargoyles, but rather referred to simply as grotesques, or chimeras.

I agree that the head growth isn't great but keep in mind these fish are still fairly young. As far as fat I don't see it they just look well fed to me.
Definitely not fat.
It's o.k. everyone is entitled to there own taste.

As I'm sure many of you are aware in Japan a "National" prize of one million yen was offered to the first person to have a go-sanke Koi one metre in length, measured from end of nose to end of tail. That was achieved. I understood from Geert (about 3-4 years ago) that the All Japan Ranchu Association had set a size goal for a 30 cms Ranchu (I assume measured nose to end of tail) but I don't know whether or not that has been achieved. I have seen several Ranchu (in the flesh) larger than 25 cms but without exception they were coarse looking specimens and had lost their overall balance and shine. Now I know that many of you guys get hang-ups on size but look at THE FISH again and forget what you have been told about their size. Do you see hood growth in balance with body size? I can't. Do you see body length in proportion to body depth to give the impression of power? I don't. Do you see magnificent colour and skin quality? I don't.

Pretty hard to tell from those pictures the last one doesn't look too bad.
The rarity factor makes it unique and my taste makes it beautiful.
Do they conform perfectly to the standard? No but how many HUGE fish do?
It very well could be the closest to the standard of a ranchu of it's size.

I ran into this in IBC circles... Especially judging female bettas. I saw females winning that were average to below average fish, but huge. These same judges that picked these fish could not breed a good halfmoon to save their lives... No shock.
I saw some AGA shows where I felt similar. But the judging has improved IMO over that time and I now see quality over sheer size.

This isn't this first time I've heard something like this.
But if 2 fish were being judged and they were neck and neck as far as there conformation to the standard I personaly feel the bigger fish should get the nod. To me I feel it's just plain harder to get a BIG fish close to the standard as opposed to a smaller one. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, when 2 fish are equal, bigger one wins... BUT this sounds good in theory, but I have rarely run into this case. Its more a hypothitical...

While it is interesting to see such large fish, In my experience the more you turn up the heat, pump them full of food, and grow them bigger...then the shorter the lifespan. I'm thinking of showing some fish this year and I certainly hope it's not all about size! :)

I have seen Chinese ryukin this big in Ohio, basically a little old lady had a bunch of these in a pond and feed them 6 to 8 times a day and by fall they were about 2.5 pounds, form was poor, but giant.
You have to wonder how many eggs a fish like that would throw, 25,000 eggs?, Sorry just dreaming I fully realize fat fish often never breed...cool pics

I have a female Ryukin that's not huge but very stocky probably around a pound in weight and she threw no joke 5 to 6 thousand eggs. About 3000 were fertile. I had her in a spawning tank with the male and you couldn't see the floor or half the walls of the tank. I couldn't imagine trying to hand spawn such a fish I'll end up with carpal tunnel by the time I'm done.

Our big black s v r that won 4 reserve GC's that died last summer was at least the size of those but had better confirmation/balance. Probably a pic of her somewhere on the AGA site. RIP Ebony.

Wow, big fish. Maybe they should be raised for food:)
The color on these is not that great. The Thai black ranchu seem to be more uniformly black.

I want that many eggs... ha ha ha... I am tired of working with small spawns....

Rob - It is true that Thai black is better. These fish just came out from green water. The black color dilutes/fades in green water. On the other hand the red color intense. (I am green water user also)
The breeder/owner is going to turn them back to black now. Please check the same thread on FynnMood a couple of weeks later. He may show the difference after he brought them back to black.
Speaking of black, Gary would you happen to have a Thai black Ranchu?
