Everything was going so well.... Yesterday, I performed a little filter maintenance. I have an eheim 2213, and it had been a month since I cleaned the impeller. I disconnected it, drained 1/2 the water into a bowl, moved the filter media basket into the used water, and dismantled the impeller, cleaned it in used water and put it back together. I also added some new floss to go around the purigen bag, since the bag is rectangular, but the media basket round. There must have been some new water somewhere that got in and killed some BB...
When I woke up this morning, the aquarium water was cloudy. Test results showed my ammonia at 0.25, nitrite 0 and nitrate 5-10. This seems to indicate a mini-cycle in my tank.
My new lionhead (the one I got 3-4 weeks ago) developed cloudy eyes overnight. I'm assuming it is due to the mini-cycle and thus is caused by the ammonia in the water. I moved it to the betta tank (15gal), which I cleaned yesterday and has 0 ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. The betta is in a bowl for now.
For now I am just observing. It isn't showing any signs of stress. The water quality in that tank is perfect. Should I treat for cloudy eye? I have some melafix and aquarium salt, both treatments recommended for this type of illness. Suggestions?
