Has anyone ever noticed the salt bath measurement discrepancies in Dr. Johnson and Rick Hess's book Fancy Goldfish?

Please forgive the criticism if one or both of these authors are on this site but I am having a heck of a time making sense of how to dose my tank because in some sections it says use 1 teaspoon (tsp) and in others it says 1 Tablespoon (TBS). I can't believe this made it off the editors desk. Shame on you!!!

So what is it guys? If we want to achieve a .03% salt bath should we add 1 teaspoon per gallon or 1 tablespoon per gallon?

I used 1 teaspoon per gallon method. The best is to get salinity meter.

Hello sivedrops/sheesh,
best easy way is by metric ,weight. you need a gram scale.
1% salt is 10 grams per liter; .1 % salt is 1 gram per liter ; .01 % salt is 1 gram per 10 liters. .03% is 3 gram per 10 liters .

.03%
You don't want .03%! What you need is 0.3%, which is 10 times as much as .03%.
Get a kitchen scale, and a jug measuring litres instead of gallons, and life is easy: 3 grams salt per litre of water equals 0.3%

Agree on the salinity meter and if you work with metric units it is all much less confusing.

One teaspoon per gallon is about 0.1%. One tablespoon per gallon is about 0.3%. If you really want 0.03% then add about 1 teaspoon to three gallons.

The usual recommendation is to add one teaspoon per gallon every twelve hours so as not to shock the fish. After three doses, the cumulative concentration is then about 0.3% which is the usual therapeutic dose for a prolonged treatment.

You probably need 0.3% and not .03% salt!

Then, my calculation for you:

1. I just measured 1 TBSP salt with a weight result of 20 grams
2. 1 US Gallon is 3.785 liters

Calculated in % is 1 TBSP salt in 1 US Gallon = 0.528%

So, you should use 1 TBSP for 2 US Gallon. That is 0.264 %, a little bit less than 0.3%
