After the first spawning and sometimes before females are always slightly lopsided, this is a great way to sex the fish.
get a pic from the top!

I am currently not seeing asymmetrical bellies in my SxK's, however I see many pictures of thai ranchu (based on Japan bloodlines) that have asymmetrtical bellies. I don't see that in photos from mainland Japan. I'm trying to feed my fish more right now, but I don't want to cause them any problems, either.

over feeding is probably the cause. i get asymmetrical after thanksgiving too. someone correctly if i am wrong, but it think it is a temporary condition and symmetry returns when the gut clears on a better feeding schedule. i say this seeing my fish that have be overfed be lopsided for a day then returning to original shape later after lots of pooping. if the fish you saw are really being pushed then the gut might be packed with food. the Japanese might just be more aware of this in their feedings or when they take the picture.
i don't think the japanese have a monopoly on fish keeping wisdom and success. there are many talented masters and keepers in Thailand and Singapore among other places. you might just be comparing the fish of some hack like myself to a master. i think it is more a matter of the keeper than the country.
can you post examples of each.
could also be genetic. tosakin that i have had that develop early SBD almost always have asymmetrical bellies in advance of the spinning and flipping and no food regime including no food helps.

I always blame it on genes. Fish with asymmetrical belly almost always develop swimming/floating issues when they grow up.
