Hi all,

I am trying to spawn my TVR that I just got. Since TVR are quite difficult to spawn. So I come up with new method, "Gang Bang". Does any breeder on here try this before? I mean not that you just keep them together and luckily they just spawn. But really trying/meaning to get a spawn by put a group of fish.

So far, I only see male chasing male. For some reason, It's make me think of Fred and Dan!

Most of my May spawns were mop spawns with 2 males to one female. Its the more traditional method. You just need your female to me ready. Since those are tosai, you may just have to get lucky... or wait till Sept..

Try to remember this is a family site Paul...LOL

I know that, Dan! That what I did in the past and it is very common in mating the fish. This is why I want to ask to see if anyone here have really put a big group of fish to spawn.

Now I'm thinking to add my big male Black ranchu to the group. Just afraid my female can't come back!

Did I spot my fish in there? These guys are bigger than I thought, not sure they're good for breeding yet though.

I am thinking there is merit in older fish producing a higher % of good fry. But in the states we are not at the point where we don't need to breed out of anything but Oyas.

I can't speak for Ranchu, but I flock spawn my fantails (typically 4 males / 4 females) as I only want one spawning per variety per year. This gives me lots of fry to work with and having used the same fish as both nisai and oya (3 and 4 years old) the quality in both the latter years has been much better than the first attempt when they were just 1 year old.

i keep mine in groups and when the mele of chasing starts i lift the pairs i want to cross and hand spawn them into in separate bowls. i think the hormones are higher is there is a group, and the spawning better—more the merrier.

most male ranchu i have kept are very poor chasers if they chase at all. however the tosakin i had were very aggressive chasers. i would keep two males tosakin with the school of TVR. i figure GF hormones and behavior are the same no matter the breed. the tosakin would get the females ready and then i would hand strip the TVR—poor tosakin did all the work but get none of the reward ;(

after the females are done i remove the chasing males but leave the nonchasing males (hoping to get them some more exposure to the female hormones).

So, any luck with the spawning?
