Different vintage Hydro sponge parts not snug?

I have some various ages of Hydro sponge strainers (male and female) and bullseyes. I've found I have to mix and match them carefully to get snug fits for double stack setups and sometimes have to use teflon tape. Anyone else noticed this slight difference?

Yes.

Once I have one put together I try to keep those parts together.

I see that all the time, I use a plastic straw cut in pieces as a wedge to get a snug fit

OK, so I'm not paranoid. Will definitely consider them matched sets going forward. And drinking straws will be much easier to deal with wet than the teflon tape - nice tip.
