2011 breeding season I lost a lot of good potential top view calico babies. This is one of the survivor. See what you guys think.

Kendal - You asked one time of this fish's top view video.

Thanks Joe. But I am not sure yet if this color will stick. If not, there is always next year. :)

I was wondering is crossing to a dark metallic/wild/tea color would help since they are basically sakura at this point???

I was going to try this....since Guenther has had such good results with his fans/ryukins.

Yes. I have heard that it would bring out blue. Never personally get to try it because of the lack of wild color fish.

I am keeping two wild colors from this spawn and see if they retain that color two years later. If they do they would serve me as a cross for blue.

This fish in particular has black patches underneath the scales. The white color is very different from other white calico that I get. It looks like Pearl color in cars. Not sure if that will make any difference. Only time will tell.

Let me know if you have any other thoughts that might reach the goal faster.

No!
I did'nt use wild color or tea(brown) color metallic fantails.
I bred with those dark near black metallic colored fish you can find if you cross stable blue calicos! Only use this fish if they are LATE DEMELANIZERS (3 years or longer black)!

Here my picture again how to finde this fish:

I'm not shure if you can finde those fish in calico ranchu.

Conformationwise you need to work on the back end. The distance between the belly and the tail shoulder is too much. That means in most cases the fish is too shallow in the back curve from the side. Hope this helps.

keep working on this and posting results. i am glad you are still pursuing this.

Maybe next time display in dark/black tub. white fish and fins are hard to see in a white bowl. it is hard to tell where the fish ends and the bowl starts.

I think the colors look pretty good. Can you tell us again how you got this fish? Did you cross a ranchu to a calico lionhead or some other breed? How many generations does this represent?

thanks,
Rob

well, I tried using a tea X white matte with a couple faded patches and got a lot of blue! They were out of calico ranchu and held ok for a year plus. I saw metallic blues that came out of it that are still blue just this last week.

It was a just for kicks as the fish were out of calico ranchu but had dorsals and long tails, Orandas?. I just wanted to see what would come out and see how strong the partial dorsal gene is and colors too. Had a mix bag...kept the Oranda like fish. Next generation through almost 100% shark fins! = donated the breeders to our local club as tank fish and culled all the shark fins. Was fun though....here is a vid:

Also had azuma looking marks...red heads blue bodies, blue metallics.

I did this to Azumas this year and did not have the same at all. 50% calico and 50% tea...so is it a crap shoot?

Then your matte was actually a calico. Calico to wildtype gives you 50/50.

I am not so good at all the terminology....but the azumas were regular eyes X tea colored....in the other breeding the calico had dark eyes X tea.

Thai cross with chinese calico ranchu.
Second generation.
Will need at least another 3 years to get to something decent.

Never owned a top view though i should be using it.

Chris's fish would be perfect! :D

Chris - with open arms and empty tank i welcome your award winning ranchu. :D

well, this is why you probably will not be able to hold blue and black.

I did this too, TVR to calico ranchu...lost blue and black = sakura. I was thinking to try go back to a wild color and see if that helps.

Maybe after I get a spawn from her this spring, or perhaps some of her offspring. :)

You are too kind and generous Chris.

Yes you are right. I don't think the black will hold. So far the blacks are still there. But they may be gone soon.

The peduncle is too thin. Like Dan said the tail tuck is not steep enough. Lots of issues.
