The hump on BoZo is even bigger than it looks in the pic, I ran out of space on my memory card before I could get a pic that really justified it.

These fish are good pet grade fish and I'm sure you are enjoying watching them grow. Most have what I would consider weak tails and head issues (i.e. eyes shouldn't bulge out and show show no head growth - observe the two red and whites). High quality ryukins should have broader tails lobes and not fantail finnage. They should also be much deeper in the body.

Best regards,
Billy

Thank you Billy for your observations....as far as head growth goes,it must be the picture angle or something because I'm positive non of them have it. I was very positive that the last fish BoZo is very much pet store quality as that's where I putchesed it. As far as the other two go, one of them I believe the mostly Orange one placed 2nd in its size & class at the Chicago Show. In your opinion is a deeper body something that can be developed with grooming or breeding? :)

Your doing a good job with these guys Lisa.
They look healty and well fed.
Grooming is a very important part of raising goldfish and it looks like
you got it.
You have to keep in mind that it's VERY hard to find good show quality Ryukin in the U.S. even if your willing to spend money.
Ian (ranchufan16) and I have been grabbing any Ryukin that looks good and trying to breed the best to make them better. This is the long road but it's fun and you end up learning alot about Ryukin.

It's a good progress and they grow pretty big. I don't remember seeing any good article on how to groom Ryukin. Basically we are aiming for small head, deep body with good hump, balance fish. Hope some of us can achieve it in the near future.

The head issues I see in Ryukins lately are becoming worse. I think this is because of all the crossing going on in commerical chinese stock it seems. Yes, good ryukins seem to becoming scarce. I will say the best I have seen lately were bred by Greg(ranchu fancier), he has some nice stock going. He had several at the Chicago show that were exceptional.

Nice to see your fish and their progress!! If I remember correctly from talking with you at the Indy show, you piicked these up from the vendor (minus the last one) at the Kentucky show? I too have 2 of his fish.... One thing I noticed about him was, that no matter what fish you bought, he said they were his best fish.....that being said...
Ok, first they are a bit stream lined for ryukin, body needs to be deeper, for this, feed a higher protien diet(chopped up boiled egg white, tuna), and feed a pellet food that is large in size (picked this up from Billy) for some reason this really seems to work, I have seen a HUGE improvement in my own ryukin since starting this.
Finnage...well it is long...but it isn't quite there yet...not sure really if there is a way to groom the finnage maybe don (nygold) can chime in on that. Billy was right, a good ryukin has lobed fins, not fins that come to apoint and that is hard to come by... I have always heard clean clean clean water and lots of brimeshrimp seem to help.
Now, for the positive, it is obvious you are taking good care of these fish, they seem very healthy and good coloration! Keep up the work and keep posting your progress!! nice to see another breed being groomed!!

Ian- so far they have been eating Saki green & frozen bloodworms.as far as a larger pellet size goes, what has worked for you? Did yours take to the egg whites & tuna easily, any tips or tricks would be helpfull. I've just won several of the smaller ryukins from kens auction last week and want to start them all out on the new feedings. Also does water depth play a roll in their development ?

I would avoid the saki with Ryukin...leads to headgrowth....not good. Bloodworms also can make a fish grow headgrowth, for these guys I would stick with frozen brimeshrimp (mix in bloodworm everynow and then but not as a staple) I use Ken's fish food (not the auction ken but kens the supply guy fish food) large protein/growth pellet or Omega one medium size pellet or large pellet. It took a couple of days for the fish to get used to the egg whites but that's all I fed them so they got used to it, now it is their chocolate...they can't get enough. The tuna they had no problems with, I cut it a bit, smaller chunks. But it fouls the water quickly I do a water change the next day...always. Water depth...o theres a fun topic, some will say no..some will say yes. Personally I have had better luck with getting the rounder body in a deeper tank rather than a long shallow tank/tub...but thats me. Somepeople have no luck with a deep tank. Also, don't forget to add shelled boiled peas to their diet!! a MUST for alll deep bodied gf!

You did a good job grooming these guys, they look pretty big. What's your feeding schedule like? Do you know their ages? Keep us posted and would like to see pictures of your new additions.

I have never kept Ryukins though they are beautiful fish! They look quite healthy! You've done a wonderful job with them :)
