My F1 Whiting Bristols spawn yesterday. Small number of eggs. The parent fish are quite dark in colour. I kept the darker F1s together and so I'm expecting dark to black F2s.

Yes Gary, I've been wanting to bring some fish back to you for some time but I've not been lucky with the spawns the past 2-3 years. I guess this time will be IT.

Gerard,

can you please show images from the parents?

Yes Guenther, I'll do that the next few days.

We pobably have to start separating the genetics to prevent inbreeding. I have the following;
Parker
Valerie
and Wolf

This is pretty exciting, the Bristol/Midnights are coloring, I still can't decide what to keep vs throw away. Two more weeks and it won't matter, many fish moving to the outside on Easter!:exact:

Gerard,

thank you very much for the images.
Nice fishes, I especially like the black female.

But can you please explain to me what do you mean with "whiting"?
For me, the American labels like midnight, skyblue or whiting are unknown.

All the Bristol Shubunkins in North America come from famous UK breeders lines. The breeders who are well-known in North America (to me anyway) are Tony Roberts, Pat Davies, Jim Whiting, etc.

Tony Roberts Bristols show the most skyblue colour. The ones I had, showed mainly skyblue on a bluish grey body, some black freckles and black streaks into the tail fin. I think John Parker's main line are Roberts.

Jim Whiting's Bristols (that I've seen and have) are darker in colour with brown and black mixed and some orange. Hence my reference to Whiting.

I don't know much about Pat Davies Bristols but I heard they are more colourful having more orange/red.

Midnight shubunkins were developed in the USA by the late Ernie Tresselt of Hunting Creek Fisheries, from american shubunkins. These Bristols have many black patches which can be very deep black (hence the Midnight nickname) on grey.

Gary Hater is now developing Bristols Shubs which would be as deep black as the Midnight Shubs.

Correct me if I'm wrong guys! That's what I think I know, lol.

I had been wondering what a midnight shubunkin looks like - they are indeed very gut looking! Thank you for sharing those photos.

Sorry Flaringshutter, I guess your avatar on that site made me forget. Yes, the picture is from the aquariacentral.com website. That's the first site that appears when you search for "midnight shubunkins". In fact, there are many more pictures of these beautiful Midnights on aquariacentral.

No problem! I'm a photographer for my day job, so I'm sort of a stickler about photo credits. :)

Glad to see my shots are helpful.

I love the Bristols! Such lush finnage.

Parent Whiting Bristols spawned today. So I'll have another batch of F1 to play with.

About 50 F2 Whiting Bristols are free swimming and eating.

Batch of F1 from initial parents will hatch tomorrow April 5, 2009. Number unknown yet.

About 250-300 F1 fry from April 5 spawn.

I've noticed a few fry with tripods or double tail. This also happened last year but I haven't given any thought to it. Is this normal in Bristols due to their Moor ancester? Is it a result of Jim Whiting's outcrosses to get darker Bristols? John Parker? Anyone?

I'd love some Bristols too! I'm looking for dark Bristol fry and Midnight fry too, since my midnight pair has turned out to be M/M.

Anyone ever kept double-tailed Bristol shub offsprings? Do they turn out to be long bodied veils?
