Last night one of the Ranchus that I have in isolation sprayed eggs all over there tank. I had placed a spawning mop in the tank just in case. Some of the eggs made there way on the mop. There is another fish in the tank as well. If the other fish was a male would the water be cloudy from the milt? Not sure when they would have spawned. The tank there in is a cut down version of a 55gal. Same foot print just shorter. The eggs on the mop are basicly clear with a slightly white hue. Placed the mop in seperate tank just in case. So could they be fertile?

You should be able to see the white breeding tubercles on the leading edge of the pectoral fins of the other fish if it is a male ready to breed.
Otherwise just keep the eggs for 3-4 days, and you'll know.

You will know tonight or tomorrow morning if they are fertile. The fertile ones remain clear. The milt will not usually cloud the water. It only takes a drop.

Thought the eggs were infertile. Most seeemed to be white and starting to grow fungus. Decieded to remove mop from tank. To my surprise there were fry, around thirty or so. My first ranchu fry.:yess:

Congratulations :yess: , now you know the other fish is a male ;-)

It always seems to go like that: I believe to see only moldy eggs, think there can't be more than a handful fry if at all - and then I end up with more than I bargained for (1000 fry in the case of my ranchus).
Happy fry raising!

if this is your first time? then do not forget to begin to prepare the baby brine shrimp hatchery to provide fresh live food in a few days.

Ranchu fry are doing well, and eating everything in site. My 53 year old eyes have yet to see a major problem. No spikes or severely crooked backs. Feeding mainly baby brine with daily water changes.
