Hello, My name is Jeff, ( some of you may have known me as Bodyboarder my pseudoname in the forums)
I am 49 years old and have looked after Fish in aquariums and ponds for as long as I can remember. I do not deem myself as an expert or gods gift to fishkeeping, but i try my best in keeping my fish and breeding from them. I always have had goldfish and they are my first love, I am going to relate what happened to me with my last importation of fish from the UK.
Well after much trouble and trying to sort out a situation which has occured due to strange circumstances with this Importation of fish, I think I have no alternative but to tell my story so that anyone thinking of importing fish ask yourselves is it worth all this trouble.
I have previously in 2008 and again in 2009 imported fish direct from China and singapore via an Importer in Barcelona and apart from very high prices the fish i got were of quite good quality. (some of you may have seen the pictures in the several forums i move in).
on the 12th of February 2010 i wrote an e-mail to STARFISHERIES in the UK.
IT WROTE..
Hi Andy
I have just been given your E-mail by John Parker, in Brooklyn NYC in the states via the GK site.
I am very desperate in trying to get my hands on good quality breeding stock of Ryukins & Lionheads, Or Ranchu.
John has told me you export to Europe so how can we arrange to get out some Fish??
Can you find me some good quality female Ryukins?? I also need a Pair or two of Good quality Lionheads preferably or Ranchu failling the first??
I would be very interested in seeing what fish you stock, your prices and what sizes?? I can easily order 6 large fishes 5 to 6 inches or 12 smaller ones of 2.5 to 3 inches..
and i will certainly talk it out with one or two friends so there may be even more!! :-)

I await your reply,
all the best, and kind regards

ANDY REPLIED on the 13th Feb 2010

Hi Jeff

Thank you for your email.

I am fairly certain I have all the fish you are looking for.I am also fairly sure that I can send them to you in Spain as we send fish all over the world.

The important thing is for you to give me a list of what you and your friends are looking for and an idea of your budget per fish as I have different qualities and grades of fish.Just for your information there is a lot of difference in a fancy goldfish at 5-6" over size 2-3".This being body size,stature and age.However at this larger size they are very impressive but obviously the price reflects this.That is why it is best if you could give me an idea of budget per fish this would then help me try and find what you are looking for.

I am not sure how quick you would want these but I am selecting fish out of the ponds for customers over the next coming week so I could possibly try and find what you may require as well.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Andy

I was very excited at the prospect of getting good quality fish, and replied to him.

Well I would be interested in Good quality Fish, firstly
"High backed" "Good humped" "preferably Short Tailed" Ryukins I need 3 females preferably RED/WHITE or WHITE. sizes would be 5" to 6" you cuote them at around £75.00 a head..
secondly "Well arched backed" "Good head growth" Ranchu I need 1 Male & 2 females Iwould prefer a two WHITE fish and one BLACK one
You cuote them at the same price of £150.00 a head.. So that would be my budget!
If you were as kind as to send me photos of the fish you selected for me i would be very grateful! as its important for me to see how they will look!!
My closest airports would be Malaga or Seville ( I prefer the former as Its better connected and i always use it for my Travels).
Do i need to do any paperwork on my side?? How much would this order be with all added???
I am just about talking to friends over the phone and internet so if there is more i will be contacting you later..
Thanks for the opportunity and lets see what we can buy off you :-)
Kind regards

HIS REPLY.

Thanks for the email.Before I check the fish availability I guess to fly the fish to you would be around £250.00.I could check this exactly if this cost is ok with yourself.

You would have to collect the fish from the Airport( not sure which yet) and as far as I am aware this should be fairly straight forward although it would be worth checking from your end as maybe there is some criteria which you may need my help with.

The starting point is could you confirm the freight rate is acceptable.I can then start to check things out.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Andy

I replied saying yes i agreed with the Price of the frieght, would like photos of the fish and awaited news from him.. and on the 16th informed him of my working hours and the long periods of time i would be unavailable due to my shifts and inability to carry a mobile phone on me due to work restraints.
on the same day came his reply

Sorting out the fish.Pictures will be with you Thursday evening.You can let me know if they are ok and then I will hopefully send the fish to you Monday.

I will be in touch.

Kind Regards

Andy

I replied promptly as i was very eager,
Hi Andy so I will reply to you on thursday night and If I agree( Which i am sure i will) I will promptly send you the money on Friday so the cash will be at your bank 42 hours later.
Please also send me the total amount i need to pay you, your account number to do the transaction and any details that i may need to pay you up in full.
Lastly a copy of the bill of health and an invoice numbre so i can present this at the Spanish side of things prior to collecting them OK
Once again thank you very much indeed and looking forwards to seeing the fotos..
kind regards and best wishes

his reply below, spelled out that here comes the First signs of things not going to go well !! I was willing to pay for everthing including the Bill of health..
Hi Jeff
No problem.Will need a quick reply from yourself once you have all the information so that I can action the flights etc.

As my farm is a regulated site my Government does not require me to send with the fish any bill of health as this is all checked when we buy the fish otherwise they would not be able to enter into the UK.My site is also checked on a regular basis by our Government.

We have sent quite a number of fish into Europe and this has not been a problem and I believe Spain has no controls in place for diseases affecting Goldfish so again this should not be a problem.

I will send the photos through on Thursday and I look forward to hearing from you.Bank details will be supplied at the time but I must stress the money must be in my account prior to Monday and I wiill have to pay the freight on Friday.I hope this is ok.
Kind Regards
So the bill of health was not needed!! I was not unduly worried and this was a big mistake on my part..
I then replied

Hi Andy
Do You want me to get the money in Tomorrow Wednesday?? If so Reply with details and amount OK! If i do not hear from you tonight or early tomorrow morning i will get the money in on Thrusday.. I think there should be no problems with the money reaching your account promptly OK.

Thanks for clearing that theres no problem with the health bill then its fine by me, I thought this were still in place, I stand corrected..
Ok awaiting your reply with details

to which he replied
Thursday will be ok.You need to agree what fish you would like and I am just awaiting exact flight costing before I take any money.
I am not around tomorrow but sorting all this out on Thursday for you.
We normally take payment by Card which avoids any problems but if you can get the money into the account by Monday that is fine.

I will be in touch.

Kind Regards

The following day i wrote back to him 17thFeb 2010

Andy try passing me your details and bank account ASAP, so i can quickly get to do the Transfer on Thursday so the money will be in the account even sooner OK ( If you can send them of later tonight!!)
Thanks again
looking forwards to the seeing the fish.

I hope they do well and I get a great hatch. I am hoping to achieve a A solid black Bristol. I also have my metalic yellow commons with some of my Bristols. I want to achieve a metallic yellow on a Bristol. Dont know if its possible or not thought I would give it a try.Both of these are going to be seperate from my main Bristol lines. Those guys have spawned 8 times in the last week!!!!! Gary most of the ones I got from you were males LOL! which is great I had a shortage of males. so in my Main Bristols two major lines the Valerie Burtson line and the Gary hater lines. Michelle yours are Burtson line.

I had to show some of the marginal plants and infrastructure, It is still a little early for the plants, but some of the new varieties are pretty cool;

I almost forgot a quick shot of some small golden orfes. The clip also shows the pure oxygen diffusers;

Lastly, a pictures of some fountains and some of the ponds that house hybrid striped bass and Amurs;

I had a great time, I left with some Prazi, some light bulbs and a new plant extract for shedding bacteria that is supposed to be similair to Melafix but a different plant and at a hicher concentration.
Sorry the Srassar Comet clip is posted below. The previous clip in this series is one of their tub rooms for retail sales and pick up.

Once in a while, they sell off oversized specimens for back yard pond use, these Red Fantails are extremely large;

While I started my career in goldfish with Red Caps, I always had Black Moores, these were really vigorous. There are also sond others mixed in;

I think this next video piece shows the quality of American Shubunkins. While they have been on sale for a few weeks, there are still a lot of coll blue fish to pick out;

Last Friday instead of lunch I traveled to the far east side of Cincinnati to Jones Fish Hatchery. Located on Church Street in Newtown , Ohio it is always a htrill and great time. The General Manager, Adam told me early in the week that the koi and goldfish were coming out of quaranteen and that there was some cool stuff.

The Hatchery is located at the site of a famous spring discovered in the late 1700's. Water still flows several hundred gallons per minute. This allows for keeping the fish in close quarters when they are ready to sell because the water is always 55F. Also unique is that the facility is VHS certified. Spring marker is below;

The facility has many ponds and also tow large tup hoses for keeping fish ready for stocking in game lakes or in water gardens. The entrance is below;

Goldfish are mainly water garden pond fish, but there is something about having 200 Black Mores or 3000 American Shubunkins to choose from, below is a quick shot of the Sarassa Comet Tub;

Hope you are enjoying the visit, more to come....
Many of us with Veiltails and sigle tails are misssing the boat. It seems quite simple based i=on this years spawns to get longtailed singletailed fish in the F-1 generation. After you have you veiltail spawning I suggest you try a single female to a male veiltail. A coupke of adults are listed below, they are quite enjoyable;

On this page he hides out as Bluebelly Mandely, in life he is an accomplished breeder in greater Cleveland. He basically raises his babies ( mostly single tails) in large outdoor lakes. Most of the non-imported yellow commons come from his breeding effort. For more than a decade he has been messing around with the discrete colors and scales types when you put blue bellies ( guanine restricted fish).
Recently he published a couple of interesting articles on sclae types. Since the English publication is not copyrighted Dave gave me permission to publish the two articles;

You may have to enlarge to see the words on this page from the Enlish magazine, but take a minute and study what you know about scale types and answer the questions. Then look at the answers;

The two articl;es raise great questions about bluebllies vs. matt fishes. It also asks the question about raising matts as colored varieties.

Enjoy!

ALL Breeders!

Today we have a selection that is in part from my good friend from Streamson Chua. A professionsal geneticist and excellent fish breeder he has been working on Veiltails and Braodtails for a long time.

To start with a cautionary note!

"One thing to really mention.

The veiltails from the broadtail crosses have a lot of problems with high quality finnage. If you are going to encourage people to breed veils from broadtails, you should mention that they will be in a long process to produce high quality veiltails. Somehow, there are other genetic factors that are involved that make for really nice finnage.

My estimate is that the keepers will be about 1% or less of all the veils that come from a cross that has not been selected for veiltail finnage - ie broadtails only. This is based on my experience with generating veils from broadtails only. I think I must have raised several hundred veils to get 3-4 nice ones. Once you get them, it is easier as the frequency of nice ones gets much higher. The first cross is the killer."

Streamson

We see stuff on this board about crossing this to that and what might be the outcome. The outcome is typically counted in the genetics world. Dr. Chua has saved us some effort in the email tanscript below;

There is a subtle difference between the choptail and the butterflytail. It is hard to see in the photos but it is obvious in person. The choptails are huge and grow really quickly whereas the butterflytails/broadtails have longer finnage.

My preference is for the broadtails as opposed to the veiltails.

Also, when I spawn veil x veil, all of the fish come out veiltails.

Broadtail x veil produces 50% broadtails and 50% veiltails.

Broadtail x broadtail produces 25% choptails, 50% broadtails and 25% veiltails.

Choptail x choptail - 100% choptails

Choptail x veiltail - all progeny are broadtails

These are all observations from my stock of fish. I think that it applies to most stocks although there may be some that are different.

Also, I agree with you that selecting for an unnotched tail fins too early is a mistake. The tails fill in as the fish grow.

Here are some pics of his key work;

The first fish is one of his Broadtails;

The next fish a extremely nice Veiltail;

And last but Obviously not least a Chop tail;

Now for the genetics piece, Streamson and I have had this discussion for years and I tend to completely agree with the correspondence below;

Gary,

I have a very strong hunch about the genetics of the veiltail trait.

I noticed that you have a blog on one of the new GF web sites and thought you could put this up.

The secret is to realize that it is due to two different genes!

The first gene gives the delta, un-notched tail. I don't know about the inheritance of this but assume that it is recessive. So, any fish with the delta tail should be homozygous for it.

The second gene gives the long fins. This one is definitely dominant. One copy of the dominant allele gives the intermediate broadtail phenotype. Two copies give the veiltail. It is possible that there are 4 alleles involved. I am in favor of this as this could explain the stunted fish that crop up in veil x veil crosses. The angelfish crowd call these guys superveils.

This explains chop tails and veiltails.

I would make an analogy to guppy tails - delta tails = veiltails and sword tails = comet tails

Thanks,
Streamson

Well this could lead to a discussion, I am pretty much in agreement with the exception of Chop Tail X Veiltail = Broadtail. I will have to be more observant this year....

Thanks GH

In one of my 150 gallon glass grow out tanks I have a mixed bag of Philadelphia Veiltails and Bristols Shubunkins. Not all of these fish are perfect specimens but the red veil with black eyes is pretty cool (Matt or Nacreuos?) and the Bristols in this shot have been raised unheated.

http://s552.photobucket.com/albums/j...t=VID00186.flv

Also in this set is a tub shot showing three crosses from last year. Featured are Tosakins that are just starting tail twist, Ryukin X Tosakin crosses and a veiltail (nacreous) that has blue/black pigmentation.

http://s552.photobucket.com/albums/j...t=VID00186.flv

Question: do you people desire these clips to be longer or shorter? Do you prefer still pics?

Cheers
